SUMMARY:IOS Member's Meeting: March 2026 - Talk by Malcolm Moodie on The Orchids of Thailand
DESCRIPTION:A virtual/online only meeting this month.\nWe will have a talk from Malcolm Moodie\, from the Solihull Orchid Society on The Orchids of Thailand \n  \nA little bio on Malcolm:\nI have been growing orchids for more than 35 years and have a climatically controlled greenhouse with about 300 orchids. \nThe greenhouse has two growing areas. The Intermediate area contains mainly Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums whilst the cool area has mainly Masdevallias with some Oncidium family. \nI am President of the Solihull & District Orchid Society and in the past served as their Chairman and Show Secretary. \nI am also a member of the British Paphiopedilum Society and the Orchid Society of Great Britain. \nIn addition\, I am a core member of the RHS Orchid Expert Group (Orchid Committee). \nI have travelled extensively searching for orchids in the wild travelling to Thailand\, the Malaysian peninsular\, Singapore multiple times\, Borneo twice visiting both Sarawak and Sabah all in South East Asia and also Peru and Ecuador in South America. \nThe talks I give relate those journeys. In addition\, I give talks to Gardening Clubs on Growing Orchids in the Home as a way of demystifying the misconceptions that many people have of orchids being difficult. \nIn the past I to used run a business supplying fertilisers and other sundry items to orchid growers and was the European distributor of DynaGro fertilisers among other products and use that background for a further talk on Feeding Orchids - Feast or Famine. \n  \nIf we have time we'll discuss: \n\nWhat member's have in flower now.\nAny orchid issues\nThe spring show.\n\n  \n  \nhttps://us05web.zoom.us/j/89097127007?pwd=BgTgocT6YhJRfoMIvEOGeJbHFDRXP4.1 \n  \n

SUMMARY:IOS Members Virtual Night - January
DESCRIPTION:Our January meeting will be entirely on-line\, there will be no meeting at the Botanic Gardens.\nWe will be discussing \n\nIn-door growing techniques\nThe May trip to the Mathers Foundation and organisation of that trip.\nWe'll also announce the winners of the Xmas competition.\n\nPlease feel free to RSVP below so we know how many will be joining the virtual meeting. \nAn alternative to the Orchid Show.\nAs an alternative to the very popular annual Orchid Show that took place at the NBG; it is proposed to take a stand at Bloom 2024 instead. This will be a much greater undertaking than the NBG option as 99% of the organisation was done by the Botanic gardens. The Bloom 2024 option will be entirely on the shoulders of the Society. \nWe don't need a large stand\, but what we do need are a display of orchids and plenty of people to attend the stand. Bloom runs over six or seven days. After the set up time/day; the stand will need to be covered from 9am to 6pm Thursday 30th May to Monday 3rd June. It is proposed to do this in two shifts per day\, Morning and Afternoon.  \nMembers who join in the effort to man the stand will also have access to Bloom before or after their shift. \nExpress your interest in manning the stand at Bloom 2024\nIOS May Trip\nWe have provisionally held a date of the 11th May 2024 to visit The Mathers Foundation in the South East of England. This is very close to Kew Gardens and RHS Wisley both have an extensive orchid collection and display house. \nIt would be a long weekend. The details and cost are to be worked out yet\, but it is proposed that to reduce travel-time we fly into one of the London airports on Friday morning and depart on Sunday evening. If you are interested in being part of this trip\, please can you express your provisional interest by completing the form? This isn't an obligation\, just to give us an idea of numbers interested. \nThe outline proposed agenda would be \n\nDepart Friday Morning 10th May\nFriday Afternoon: RHS Wisley to view their new Orchid House.\nOvernight stay with group dinner\nSaturday: a guided tour of The Mathers Foundation\, a private orchid collection\, see more here\nOvernight stay with group dinner\nSunday: Visit to the orchid collection at Kew Gardens\nDepart Sunday evening\n\nExpress your interest in joining this trip
