Welcome to the 2024 IOS Spring Quiz

Below here you’ll find 16 questions on orchids. I have four orchids as prizes. Some of the questions are easy, some are harder. These are all multiple choice so the answer is given, you just have to choose the correct answer. Many of the subjects have been discussed at meetings and online. Please have a go, don’t be embarrassed, its all good learning. The quiz will close to new entries on Friday 26th April and winners will be announced on Saturday 27th April. Good luck!

Answer: Peloric flowers are radially symmetrical flowers that occur in species with normally bilateral flowers,
the prize Phalaenopsis Miki Fire Fox shown above is a peloric flower.

Q3. Neotropical means "new tropics", what part of the world does it refer to?

Answer: Central & South America
it also includes all of South America, tropical coastal regions of Mexico and parts of southern USA including Florida as well as the Caribbean islands.

Q4. The orchid pictured: what orchid alliance does it belong to?

Q5. Which one of the following orchids are regarded as hardy in Ireland?

Answer: Cypripedium macranthos x franchetii
the other two listed were tropical and could only survive outside in the summer.

Q6. What is a "Nothogenus"?
Answer: A man-made/artificially bred genus
the unfortunate word comes from the Greek νόθος which means bastard + genus, so 'bastard genus'

Q7. The word Grex or Greges is used to describe complex hybrids of orchids, it means "to flock" or "a flock"; from which language does it originate?
Answer:Latin,
I did make the mistake of saying this was from Greek, but it is Latin, so Ive given you a point if you said either latin or greek

Q8. What orchid has traditionally been known as the king of orchids?
Answer: Cymbidium

Q9. What orchid has traditionally been known as the queen of orchids?
Answer: Cattleya

Answer:Bulbophylum and Dendrobium,
This was the first recognised cross within the tribe "Dendrobieae"

Answer: Vanilloideae

Q13. Most orchid flowers under go a process called resupination, what does that mean?
Answer: The flower under goes a twisting of 180 degrees
there are some orchids that don't under go resupination, the genus Disa is an example

Q14. Why do orchid bees visit orchid flowers?
Answer: to collect their favourite cologne
not for pollen or nectar; these brightly metallic-coloured bees use the orchid scent to attract a mate
